....... . "Now promise me under no circumstances will you leave me or marry any other woman", she demanded and he repeats it.  They both say the day they have anything to do romantically with any other opposite sex,  there should be a consequence.
Get this,  they didn't say this to punish each other,  they only wanted to prove "I'm damned serious about it!  I mean it!!  I can never leave you!!! ".  But man would always break promises someday,  somehow.
Promises,  oaths,  covenants are like CROSS sign. (i.e vertical & horizontal). 
1. Between man and God
2. Between man and man
Whichever way,  there's always an invisible & undieing witness in every act of covenant or oath,  which makes consequences follow even after generations past. God is aware of this,  Satan is even hyper active about it,  always wanting man to break promises....
